T20 cricket at crypto sportsbooks: what a casual fan learned in one season
I came to cricket late, through a colleague who got me watching T20 leagues a few years ago. The short format suits me. A match fits into an evening, things change fast, and there is always something to watch. Last season I started betting on it, using crypto, and it went better than I expected once I worked out where the value was.
Coverage was my first surprise. Some sportsbooks offer only the match winner for T20 games outside the biggest leagues. Others list dozens of markets per match, including top batter, total runs in the first six overs and the number of sixes. For a casual fan like me, the extra markets are where the fun is.
The toss matters more than I thought. In many T20 grounds, the team batting second has an edge, especially in evening matches where dew makes bowling harder. I started waiting until the toss before betting on the match result. Prices move as soon as it is announced, but the information is worth it.
Powerplay totals became my favourite market. The first six overs have fielding restrictions, so scoring tends to be fast. I learned the typical totals at the grounds I watched most often and bet the over or under based on the pitch report and the openers.
Rain rules took me a while. Shortened matches are settled under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method, and each sportsbook explains in its rules what happens to bets in a reduced game. Some markets are voided if fewer than a set number of overs are bowled. I check this before every match during the monsoon months.
Live betting is tempting in cricket because the momentum swings so much. I limited myself to one live bet per match, usually after the first innings when I could see what the target was.
Choosing where to bet was a matter of coverage, limits and how fast they settled. I compared a handful of crypto sportsbooks and opened accounts at two that had full markets on the leagues I follow. One settled within minutes of the final ball. The other was slower but had better prices on totals.
By the end of the season I was slightly ahead, which mattered less to me than the fact that I understood the game much better than when I started.
